Full description
In order to run the Freedom Project in Scotland we rely on a network of volunteers and foster carers. Although family and friends might be able to care for small pets, they are unlikely to have the means to accommodate a dog for an extended period of time. Rehoming centre kennels run by animal welfare charities, including Dogs Trust, are usually full to capacity and kennel accommodation, other than as a temporary measure, is very often an unsuitable environment for Freedom dogs. Additionally, many of the clients that we work with may have few funds available due to their circumstances or be in financial need.
Therefore, thanks to a network of Dogs Trust volunteers, once a dog has been collected by a Dogs Trust unmarked van from a safe location, it is then temporarily placed with a volunteer foster family.
Through the Project we will:
Give people access to immediate support in order to break the cycle of domestic abuse by entering a refuge or temporary housing.
Provide foster homes for dogs, until their owners can leave a refuge and get back on their feet.
Recruit and support volunteer foster carers with the specific aim of improving responsible dog ownership and training and behaviour awareness in volunteer foster carers.
Promote and advertise the Freedom project to domestic violence and related agencies in order to obtain more referrals and help more people escape domestic abuse.
