The grant will cover the cost of pool hire (including lifeguard) for 12 sessions (£480), swimming coach fees (£180), travel costs for participants & befrienders (£500), purchase of swim wear for 24 participants (£360), promotion and publications (£200) and running a final celebration event (certificates & lunch, £280). This will allow Sport Aberdeen to run a swim programme aimed at women who have experienced abuse. The programme will consist of two 6-week swimming taster courses (one in November and the other in January) devised to enable women to gain confidence in the swimming pool. The 1 hour sessions will be taught by a qualified teacher, supported by a qualified lifeguard in a closed environment. This project will be led by Sport Aberdeen with support from the Violence Against Women Partnership (VAWP) Aberdeen. Referrals to the programme will be made by member organisations of VAWP.
